We write for life.

One of the things I love about teaching writing to kids is that it is a skill they will use throughout their lives.

And even though it is something I love to do, I know that not all of them like it and many of them never will. But, I want them to know how important it is. And if they learn to love it, or even like it a little more, wonderful.

One day, they may write a poem, a thesis, a job application, a blog, a journal entry or a love letter. They will find their voice and they will write.

We write for life.

  1. Writing definitely is a skill for life even though many students don’t see it at the time. I do think that our enthusiasm as teachers of writing does wear off on our students and most come away with an appreciation if not love for writing.

  2. It is so true…we write for life! I can’t say I ever loved writing when I was younger, but I do love it now. I think much of it had to do with the fact of how it was taught to me when I was young…essay and story writing, but little else and definitely not a process of writing. Not at all how I teach it now! 🙂 And it definitely wasn’t taught as a “life” skill. This really is true. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Yeah, grabbing hold of one’s slippery, elusive voice — even for just a little while — is a thrilling feeling. Observing readers latch onto that voice and get carried away… even better 🙂
